Context:
Antarctica is the cornerstone of our planetary ecosphere — the refrigerator of our climate, the fount of renewal for our ocean life, the reservoir of our freshwater, and the archive of climate history recorded in tiny air bubbles trapped in its ancient ice. It is the climatic treasure of our world, a mystic planetary space, and the most magnificent world heritage that ever existed.
As the last uncolonised, unconquered, and untrampled corner of the planet, it remains the final geophysical riddle left unsolved, and humanity’s last chance to control its impulses of conquest and consumption. Antarctica is the birthright of our unborn future generations.
Yet it stands gravely threatened by climate change, serving as the canary in the coalmine of our short human existence. Only one thing stands between the conservation of this planetary heirloom and its oblivion: the law of nations.
